Situated just 15km from La Vignola, the Caves of Pastena are just outside the sleepy town of Pastena on the road that leads to the coastline of Latina. The caves themselves are of particular importance due to them being karst caves, which provide beautiful and mesmerising structures.
Going into the caves themselves allows you to get in touch with an environment that is millions of years old. All caves have been naturally formed from the flow of water through soluble rocks that have slowly dissolved with the passing of time. This phenomenon has led to the formation of caves full of stalagmites and stalactites that are continually changing.
The caves are divided into two levels. The first is called the fossil level, which is 900 metres long and shows wide cavities full of spiritualistic notions. The second, called the active level is so-called because the process of dripping is till going on to this day.
The caves are open 7 days a week, all year round and there is also the possibility of being guided by a local expert, which takes about an hour to complete. Opening hours are from 08:30 - 19:00 in the summer and 10:00 - 16:00 during winter months.
La Vignola is on hand to offer day trips to the caves, departing at a time that suits everyone.
Or you could always go there alone by car (just a 20 minute drive in the Ciociaria countryside).
